Madmen is one of all my time faves. It makes me glad I’m not a woman in the 60s, though not everything was terrible – you could have a drinks tray in your office! It’s hard not to love/hate the protagonist, the anti-hero of the mid-century, Don Draper. Perhaps it’s because I find some of his journey relatable, as he deals with clients and colleagues in his ad agency, while fighting with his inner demons in sometimes self-sabotaging ways. He has a strong dislike of authority and begin forced into structures that just don’t work for him. His chief coping strategy is simply just disappearing – after all, he’s been doing it since the Korean war. In this illustration, I wanted to capture one of those moments – where he decides to hop on a plane to California, get in a car and disappear, along with a matchoohing quote. I think we can all relate.
